In the 48th minute of the second half in a ding dong battle at Dôl Ddafydd, Pwllheli scored a try to claim the bonus point victory they needed.
Pwllheli still need 4 similar results if they are to retain their Division 1 North title while Bethesda will be glad of the 2 points to stop the slide which has seen them fall from 4th position down to 9th.
Both sides had scored 2 tries apiece in the first half. Mathew Parry, back to his best following a bout of illness, and No 8 Arwyn Griffth had scored for Bethesda while Geraint Parry and Deio Brunelli had crossed for the visitors.
With one try each converted, Osian P Jones’ 2 penalty goals accounted for Pwllheli being 18 points to 12 ahead at the interval.
Jones kicked Pwllheli further ahead early in the second period before Parry struck again. He was on Llion Lloyd’s shoulder when the centre made a typical clean break through Pwllheli’s backline. Parry’s try and conversion cut the deficit to 2 points.
Second row Rhun Morris crossed for Bethesda before Dafydd Anwyl scored from a Pwllheli driving maul and the scores were even on 26 points after 32 minutes of the half.
With 42 minutes on the clock Jones kicked a penalty goal to give Pwllheli a lifeline but Bethesda were far from finished.
An audacious chip from Morris was gathered by fellow second row Huw Williams and he found Jon Armstrong in support. The centre shrugged off a tackle before scoring a great try in the corner giving Bethesda a 2 point lead.
With 45 minutes gone the home supporters were astounded when play was allowed to continue. Bethesda were penalised near their own try-line and Pwllheli second row Huw Williams used his considerable bulk to crash over. Jones’ successful conversion was the last event of a pulsating and evenly fought contest.
