Bethesda 18 - Ruthin 5

This was the last match of the season for both teams and from the beginning it was the defences that ruled.

Both sets of players attempted to run the ball but there was no way through for anyone in the first half.

The only score of the half came after 3 minutes play when Gethin Long, Bethesda’s fullback, kicked a penalty goal.

The home side showed more urgency in the second period and the first try came after 8 minutes play. Bethesda won line-out ball near the Ruthin 22 meter area. Flanker Gethin Harper carried the ball onto the heart of the visiting forwards and quick ruck ball was won. The ball was swept to the backs and Long came into the line - a couple of typical sidesteps later and he was over the try-line. He added the conversion giving Bethesda a 10 points to 0 lead.

The visitors enjoyed a good spell of pressure but to no avail as Bethesda went further ahead after 26 minutes. Following a period of pressure in Ruthin’s 22, outside half Carwyn Williams decided that enough was enough and he dropped his 4th goal of the season to extend his side’s lead.

The visitors, to their credit never gave up and the always dangerous Josh Wilson crossed for an unconverted try after 31 minutes of the half.

Bethesda’s efforts were not over either. After 37 minutes Long scored his second try. Hooker Paul George ran strongly into the Ruthin 22 and another quick ruck was won. The ball was passed swiftly from Carwyn Williams to Huw Williams and to Steffan Owain before Long crossed in the corner.

Long’s conversion attempt went narrowly wide but there was no way back for Ruthin.
