Bala 20 - Bethesda 27

A victory in Division 1 North against Bala has been a rare occurance for Bethesda during the last few years.

The hosts started strongly again this season with their powerful forwards keeping possession for a number of phases.

However, against all expectations, it was the Bethesda that scored after 3 minutes when fullback Gethin Long entered the line and  made space for wing Gwion Williams to score a try in the corner. Long converted to give the visitors a 7 point lead.

Bala cut the lead to 4 points through a penalty kick by controlling possession and territory but Williams scored his second try following another backs move after 25 minutes.

Bala hit back with a try following a powerful forward drive making the score 8 points to 12.

Bethesda’s possession was still minimal but another backs move saw Long crossing for an unconverted try on the right after 32 minutes.

However, 2 minutes later, missed tackles led to Bala crossing for a converted try that cut Bethesda’s lead to 2 points.

As the half drew to a close a spell of possession by the Bethesda forwards gave prop Paul Thomas a bonus point try converted by Long making the score 15 points to 24 at the interval.

With the hosts playing down the slope in the second half the visitors were under pressure for most of the rest of the match.

However, Bethesda’s defence was well drilled although changes had to be made to withstand he pressure.

On a rare visit to Bala’s half Bethesda were awarded a penalty which was kicked by Long after 27 minutes.

Bala’s pressure in Bethesda’s 22 continued and a try was scored following sustained forward drives and cutting the lead to 7 points.

Bethesda finished the match strongly pinning the home side in it’s 22 meter area. Bala turned the ball over in the last movement of the match and kicked the ball dead to secure a losing bonus point
