Bethesda 7 - Caernarfon 12

Caernarfon enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and territory at Dôl Ddafydd but the result was in doubt throughout this match.

The visitors took the lead early in the first half when wing Liam Hughes crossed in the left corner for an unconverted try. Caernarfon kept up the pressure for most of the half but the home defence coped well. Caernarfon centre, Iolo Hughes looked dangerous whenever he had the ball and the visitors’ big forwards caused problems close to the Bethesda try line.

After 30 minutes play the Caernarfon backs dropped the ball in midfield and Bethesda wing Alwyn Roberts showed his soccer skills before gathering the ball and scoring between the posts. Outside half Carwyn Williams kicked the conversion giving the hosts an unlikely 2 point lead by the interval.

Bethesda hardly came out of their own half in the second period. Winning lineout ball was a problem although the scrum held up well. The home side defensive work was excellent for most of the half and, despite all Caernarfon’s possession, they were still ahead with the match drawing to a close.

With 6 minutes of normal time remaining, Caernarfon were awarded a penalty kick. From the lineout in Bethesda’s half, centre Hughes broke through the home defence. His speed was sufficient to take him to the tryline for a score which was converted by Aled Jones.

The referee added nearly 8 minutes of time allowed for stopages and injuries but Caernarfon were content to keep the ball tight and Bethesda had to settle for a losing bonus point for a hard afternoon’s work.
